12 Beers for the New Year: Thirsty Dog 12 Dogs of Christmas

My list of “12 Beers for the New Year”, is ending a little later on the calendar than I had intended (a brewery road trip and a slight bout of illness slowed me down more than I had anticipated). But I certainly can’t end this list at 11 beers, can I? The beer that I had chosen for number 12 is Thirsty Dog’s 12 Days of Christmas. I purchased this beer “to go” from World of Beer – Walden Galleria.

Thirsty Dog Brewing Company is located in Akron, Ohio, and are known for such beers as Citra Dog, Old Leghumper, Siberian Night, and Barktoberfest. 12 Dogs of Christmas Ale is ranked near the top of all the Thirsty Dog offerings.

Here is the sell sheet for 12 Dogs of Christmas.

And here is a picture of my 12 Dogs of Christmas:

Thirsty Dog: 12 Dogs of Christmas Ale
ABV: 8.3%
Style: Winter Warmer

12 Dogs pours a dark golden/amber and smells honey sweet with a backdrop of ginger. The taste is a bit different, with plenty of ginger flavor and lots of Christmas spices including cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and clove. 12 Dogs is a sweet flavored beer and with no real hop flavor present. But without a doubt the hop additions do help counterpoint the honey and malt sweetness of this beer.

This beer seems a lot easier to drink than other winter warmers I’ve encountered. I give Thirsty Dog kudos for being able to balance ginger and other spices into 12 Dogs; ginger can easily be overwhelming and must be handled delicately.

Overall this is a well-made Christmas warmer.

I hope you enjoyed reading these as much as I enjoyed drinking them. Cheers!
